The Enugu State Government has entered into a $100 million partnership with Austrian company WANDE NEXUS to modernize its water infrastructure, marking a major step toward providing sustainable and equitable water access across the state.

The agreement, sealed at the Government House on December 2, 2024, was attended by Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Thomas Schlesinger. This milestone is a testament to the state’s commitment to attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and advancing its development agenda.

Governor Peter Mbah hailed the project as a transformative breakthrough for Enugu, emphasizing the strategic importance of the investment in addressing long-standing issues in the state’s water distribution system.

“This $100 million investment will directly tackle last-mile connectivity challenges in our water supply network,” Mbah stated. “It reflects the impact of the economic reforms at both state and federal levels, positioning Enugu as a top destination for investors.”

He stressed that the agreement represents a concrete implementation plan, with funding already secured. The Mbah administration has already increased water production from an inconsistent two million liters per day to 120 million liters daily. However, the governor acknowledged the critical need to extend the distribution network to reach households effectively.

“This initiative will resolve our downstream water supply issues, ensuring clean and reliable water for every household in Enugu,” he added.

Key Highlights

Ambassador Thomas Schlesinger commended Governor Mbah for his forward-thinking leadership and commitment to improving public utilities.

“Governor Mbah’s proactive approach, including strategic meetings in Vienna with Austrian ministers and business leaders, has laid the groundwork for this partnership,” Schlesinger noted.

Dr. Ugochukwu Ugbor, Chairman of WANDE NEXUS Group, echoed similar sentiments, applauding the Mbah administration for fostering a favorable investment climate.

“This project will create 500 direct jobs, build local expertise in water management, and significantly enhance health and economic opportunities for the people of Enugu,” Ugbor stated.

The initiative will deploy advanced technologies, including Sustainable Last Mile Connectivity and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), to improve operational efficiency and expand water access.

A Broader Vision for Sustainable Growth

The collaboration aligns with Governor Mbah’s broader infrastructure development strategy, aimed at positioning Enugu as a hub for sustainable growth. By addressing fundamental public utility challenges, the project is expected to deliver long-term benefits in health, economic, and social development.

This partnership not only underscores Enugu’s growing appeal to international investors but also highlights the potential of public-private partnerships to catalyze transformative development across Nigeria.
