Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has officially taken office as the 24th Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following his confirmation by the National Assembly. He assumed the role on Monday, emphasizing a commitment to inclusive leadership aimed at fostering collaboration and addressing the nation’s security challenges.

During his address to Principal Staff Officers at Army Headquarters after the Regimental Quarter Guard ceremony, Oluyede reiterated the importance of unity and innovative strategies in tackling emerging threats.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that the COAS commended Nigerian Army personnel for their dedication and support during the period of mourning for his predecessor, the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. Oluyede praised Lagbaja’s exceptional service to the nation and vowed to build on his legacy.

Highlighting the evolving nature of security threats, Oluyede urged commanders to adopt creative and adaptable approaches in combating terrorism and insurgency, particularly in the North-East and other conflict-prone areas. He assured his officers of the Army’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at ending insurgency and maintaining national security.

Earlier, Chief of Administration Army Major General Ohwonigho Akpor described the ceremony as a significant regimental tradition. He explained that the outgoing Army flag was retired to the Army Museum as a tribute and a symbol of the leadership of the late COAS, rather than being handed over to his successor.

Lieutenant General Oluyede was appointed by President Bola Tinubu following the passing of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
