The explosive was surrounded by a sand-filled fence while police and Army bomb experts evaluated whether to remove or deactivate it immediately.

District Commander Johnston McDowell announced that a bomb found in the Rivenwood area of Newtownards was safely detonated by Ammunition Technical Officers.

“The munition found, which I can now confirm was identified as being an air-dropped SC-500 German bomb from World War Two, was understood to have been in and around 83-years-old, but still posed a significant risk to public safety, even after all this time.”

Superintendent McDowell continued, saying, “I want to sincerely appreciate all of the staff members who have been involved in keeping the public safe this week, day and night.

This operation’s success is evidence of the calibre of expertise possessed by our military colleagues.

“”We will provide an update on when residents can safely return to normality as soon as possible.”

“The operation continues till we reach the finishing phase. Thank you again for your continuous cooperation at this time.”
