Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has initiated the rehabilitation of the Obokun 33KV Feeder Line, a project abandoned for the past 11 years by previous administrations.
Governor Adeleke Revives the Long-Abandoned Obokun Power Project
Originally awarded in 2013 to serve towns and villages across four local governments in Osun East, the project was neglected by successive governments, leaving affected areas in darkness and causing significant economic decline.
Accompanied by Ijesha PDP leaders and dignitaries such as Hon. Sunday Bisi and Hon. Ibukun Fadipe, Governor Adeleke emphasized that the revival of the feeder line represents a commitment to improving the quality of life and economic well-being of the state’s residents. “I understand this project was abandoned for 11 years, leading to hardship and economic losses for the people of Obokun and nearby areas. Today, that period of darkness ends. Light has returned,” Adeleke declared.
He congratulated the residents of Obokun Local Government and neighboring communities that will benefit from the new 33KV Feeder Line, including Omi Aladiye, Akad, settlements along the Ilesa-Osogbo road, Igbajo in Boluwaduro Local Government, as well as Kajola and Osunjela in Atakumosa West Local Government. “Imole has come to your doorstep,” he added.
Governor Adeleke outlined his administration’s focus on revitalizing the state’s economy by enhancing its energy and electricity sector through comprehensive policy and legislation. He noted that Osun has drafted an electricity bill and policy aimed at expanding power generation and distribution within the state. “These initiatives, once enacted, will revolutionize Osun’s electricity landscape,” he stated.
The Governor also revealed plans for Osun to leverage its abundant natural resources, such as rivers and solar energy, to generate electricity. He expressed intentions to issue licenses for power generation, regulate the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and manage relationships between power producers and consumers. “The new framework will create a regulatory agency for the state’s power sector,” he explained.
Before the bill’s passage, Governor Adeleke has instructed the Ministry of Energy to develop an implementation plan with clear timelines and deliverables, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder involvement for sustainable outcomes. “Reliable power supply is crucial for economic growth, and our vision is for Osun to become self-sufficient in power and even supply neighboring states,” he added.
Hon. Festus Adeyemo, the State Commissioner for Energy, expressed gratitude for the Governor’s swift action in addressing the power outages in Obokun Local Government due to the deteriorated 33KV feeder line. He highlighted the significance of the project for Obokun and three other local governments, noting that its completion would restore electricity to these areas.
Praising Governor Adeleke as “Mr. Infrastructure,” the Commissioner reassured the public that the Osun Electricity Bill and policy directives have been followed. “Your Excellency, Osun has never had a policy or legal framework for the energy sector until your administration. The new electricity bill aligns with best practices and is a significant achievement,” Adeyemo concluded.
