Former Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has called for a review of federal policies to address the severe economic hardship currently affecting Nigeria. Speaking on the sidelines of a Marian Concert in Abuja to mark the 2024 Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Onaiyekan expressed deep concern over the escalating economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

He urged the public to pray for leaders to make wise decisions that would alleviate the nation’s economic strain. Onaiyekan emphasized that effective governance, characterized by justice and equitable resource distribution, is crucial for national peace and stability.

The Cardinal highlighted the growing disparity between the living standards of those in power and the general populace. He criticized the lavish lifestyles of some leaders, contrasting it with the struggles of ordinary citizens who face fuel shortages and rising poverty.

“There is a limit to what people can endure,” Onaiyekan stated. “You can’t ask people to endure poverty while those meant to address it live extravagantly. We need to review the policies contributing to this unprecedented level of pain and poverty. The middle class is disappearing, and more people are falling into poverty.”
