Nigerian Govt Alerts States Along River Benue as Cameroon Prepares to Release Dam Water

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning to states along the Benue River, urging heightened vigilance as Cameroon plans to release water from the Lagdo Dam. States potentially impacted include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and others.

NIHSA emphasized that water levels along the Benue River are currently safe, but called for preparedness to mitigate potential flooding risks. The controlled release is expected to begin at 100 cubic meters per second, with a gradual increase based on inflows from the upstream Garoua River.

Authorities have assured that the water release will be regulated to avoid flooding downstream in Nigeria, and the agency will continue monitoring and providing updates.
