Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, has directed the Nigerian government to investigate the possibility of rail-based fuel transportation throughout the nation.

In reaction to the explosion of a fuel tanker in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, Atiku made the call.

Over 100 people are said to have died as a result of the Thursday night incident.

“I am saddened by reports of the death of scores of people in a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State,” wrote Atiku in response to the news on X.

“There are far too many tragic petrol tanker explosions in the nation, including the incident in Jigawa.

It is time we looked into other options, like rail, for moving petroleum products across the nation.

Reviewing the procedure for the transportation of petroleum products and other inflammable goods, as well as providing training to drivers who handle flammable cargo, are also important.

“I would like to express my sorrow to the people and government of Jigawa State and request a prompt rescue and containment effort. When it comes to healing the wounded, no expense should be spared.

“I also offer my condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic event, and I pray for them to find solace and eternal rest for the departed. -AA”
