Man Dies After Purportedly Jumping Into Lagos Canal To Avoid Arrest

The police visited the scene and spoke with eyewitnesses who voluntarily provided statements about the regrettable incident, according to the statement. On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at around 10 a.m., the young man was riding against traffic as a passenger on a motorbike.

The rider executed a sharp U-turn as soon as they saw the police approaching in their car, and the passenger leaped off the motorcycle, crossed the street and dashed through the tipper garage that was close by. He was agitatedly warned about a canal ahead by people in the garage who saw him running towards it and simultaneously emptying his pockets.Instead of stopping, he regrettably leaped into the canal. His instinctive response startled the police, who halted their car, got out, and headed towards the canal. The young man jumped into the canal, and the people around him told the police.

“They all went to look, and after waiting for a few minutes without seeing him, the police left, thinking he had managed to get away from them.”The police did not approach him, did not make physical contact with him, did not pursue him, and did nothing. The young man just saw them and took off running. May God grant his family the strength to deal with this devastating loss. Amen. Residents of Lagos are reassured that @LagosPoliceNG, led by CP Olanrewaju Ishola, psc+, mnips, will not tolerate any unethical behaviour from its officers.
