Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage, as announced by the Federal Government.
In a statement on Saturday, the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, confirmed that the wage increase would take effect across the Kwara State public service starting from October 2024.
“This decision, which includes necessary adjustments to the salary structures, followed a successful tripartite meeting between government representatives, the leadership of the Organised Labour in Kwara State — including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) — as well as representatives from the organised private sector,” the statement read.
Nuru, who co-chaired the minimum wage committee, expressed gratitude to Governor AbdulRazaq for empowering the committee to reach a fair agreement that benefits all stakeholders. “The prompt implementation of this wage increase highlights Governor AbdulRazaq’s commitment to a proactive, worker-friendly governance approach,” she said.
Dr. Nuru added that the governor remains steadfast in his commitment to the welfare of public servants and citizens of Kwara State, as part of his broader vision for sustainable development and economic stability. She also confirmed that the wage adjustment applies to workers in all 16 local government areas of the state.
The commissioner praised the governor’s leadership and vision, noting that the new wage policy is timely and necessary, helping to mitigate the impact of current economic challenges. She further commended the cooperative spirit between the government and labour unions, which made this milestone possible.
“The new minimum wage is a clear testament to the state’s dedication to prioritizing workers’ welfare in its policies,” Nuru concluded.
