All remaining passengers were evacuated from the trains, which were traveling from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Machynlleth to Shrewsbury, respectively.
Two Trains Collide in Wales, Leaving One Person killed and Fifteen Injured
The crash occurred near Llanbrynmair village in Powys around 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
Network Rail and Transport for Wales announced that the Cambrian railway east of Machynlleth will remain closed for investigation, advising passengers to avoid the area.
“We are deeply thankful to the emergency services for their swift response in assisting our passengers and staff under such difficult circumstances,” said a spokesperson.
The services involved were the 18:31 Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19:09 Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.
Police have cordoned off the road near the crash site, less than a mile from the scene.
The A470, which runs parallel to the rail line and serves as a major north-south route in Wales, has been closed to aid emergency response efforts.
One passenger reported that the train remained upright on the track after the incident.
Traffic Wales stated that the A470 was shut in both directions between Caersws and Glantwymyn, with Transport for Wales providing replacement bus services.
The response involved ambulance, fire, local police, and coastguard teams, supported by the rail industry, BTP said in a statement.
Residents nearby reported seeing an air ambulance at the site.
BTP confirmed that the family of the deceased man has been notified and is being supported by specialist officers. They added that local residents may notice an increased police presence in the coming days as investigations into the crash continue.
