Erik ten Hag has been officially dismissed as Manchester United manager, the club confirmed on Monday.
The decision followed a 1-0 Premier League loss to West Ham United, marking the conclusion of the Dutch manager’s two-and-a-half-year stint at Old Trafford. Under Ten Hag, United struggled in the early part of the 2024–25 season, securing only three wins from nine league games.
The team’s form across all competitions also declined, achieving just four wins in 14 matches, leaving them 14th in the Premier League, seven points short of Champions League qualification spots.
Manchester United are expected to turn to club icon Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager following Ten Hag’s departure. Van Nistelrooy, brought in over the offseason to assist Ten Hag, will step into the role, while the current coaching staff remains in place.
Ten Hag’s tenure began with high hopes after he joined in 2022, and he was recently given a one-year contract extension in July, extending his stay until 2025.
Among his accomplishments was leading United to an FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, yet last season’s disappointing eighth-place finish—their lowest since 1990—prompted a summer review. Ultimately, CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox chose to keep Ten Hag on board at that time.
