FG Disburses Funds To Settle NASU Salary Arrears And Retiree Benefits.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set aside funds to cover outstanding salary payments owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Federal Universities, as well as to pay benefits to retirees covered by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme. In a statement issued on Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), confirmed that payments to NASU members have already begun, with several individuals indicating that they have received their dues.

The statement emphasized that “the Federal Government has released funds designated for the payment of withheld salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities.” Furthermore, the OAGF announced that financial resources have been made available to pay benefits to retirees through the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

The OAGF reiterated the federal government’s commitment to the well-being of Nigerian workers and retirees. This announcement comes after the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and NASU declared an indefinite strike on Monday in response to four months of unpaid salaries.

Since the strike commenced, activities have come to a standstill in universities nationwide. In an interview earlier this week, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, the National President of SSANU, revealed that top university officials, such as vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also gone four months without pay, emphasizing that universities will remain closed until all payments are made.
