The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has issued a stern warning to local government officials against misappropriating public funds. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate any violation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, which mandates the direct allocation of funds to local government accounts.
Fagbemi highlighted the historical neglect of local governance and expressed the government’s commitment to empowering local governments and improving the lives of citizens at the grassroots level. He warned that any attempt to sabotage these efforts will be met with severe consequences.
The AGF’s statement comes in the wake of a landmark Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the financial autonomy of local governments. This ruling aims to strengthen local governance and ensure that funds are used for the benefit of communities.
