Starting November 1, 2024, Air Peace will charge N200,000 for a one-way flight from Lagos to Abuja. The struggling economy has severely impacted the aviation industry, leading airlines to raise fares, causing frustration among passengers.
As a result, many Nigerians have opted for road travel instead of flights. A review of airfare on Monday revealed that Air Peace now has the highest rates, with one-way tickets from Lagos to Abuja priced at N200,000 or more. In comparison, Aero tickets range from N94,000 to N109,000, Arik Air charges between N104,405 and N139,292, and Ibom Air fares fall between N124,000 and N133,000.
The soaring prices have left many passengers stranded at airports, especially on the heavily trafficked Lagos-Abuja route, as securing seats has become increasingly difficult. An Air Peace official, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the price hike, attributing it to Nigeria’s deteriorating economic conditions.
“If you check the ticket breakdown, you’ll see we’re struggling as an airline. Operating costs are spiraling out of control. Most of these burdensome taxes go to the government, leaving us no choice but to raise prices. It’s the harsh reality,” the official explained.
Efforts to contact the airline’s Chief Operating Officer, Toyin Olajide, for further comment were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.
A businessman, Adeleke Aina, who has been flying for years, expressed frustration over the rising airfares. “With these skyrocketing rates, I may have no choice but to switch to road transport. The government seems unconcerned about this crisis. I’m worried for the future of this country,” he lamented.
