Nigeria’s power grid experienced its sixth collapse of the year, resulting in ongoing recovery efforts that commenced twenty-four hours after the incident.

As of 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, six power plants had resumed operations and were collectively generating 714.16 megawatts (MW) of electricity, according to data from the independent system operator that was reviewed by Vanguard.
Earlier today, at approximately 09:00 hours, the grid generation peaked at 1,884.48MW. Subsequently, it experienced a significant decline, dropping to a mere 48.60MW, resulting in the sole operation of Ibom Power.
However, recovery efforts resumed shortly after, with Shiroro Hydro coming back online.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported a partial disruption in the national grid on October 14, 2024, at approximately 18:48 hours. Efforts are currently underway to fully restore the grid.
Mbah further stated that while the process of restoring power to the grid commenced promptly, with the Azura power station initiating the blackstart, significant progress was made by 10:24 a.m. today. However, a technical challenge resulted in a temporary setback.
Despite the setback, Mbah stated that TCN kept up its recovery efforts, adding that the grid restoration is currently at a high point, with power being restored to roughly 90% of TCN substations nationwide. Power has been restored to the Abuja region and other significant distribution hubs.
The statement made it clear that the Ibom Gas power plant, which had been cut off from the grid, was unaffected by the partial disturbance. Ibom kept supplying power to the South-South area, which included the 132kV substations at Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu.
In conclusion, Mbah stated that a comprehensive investigation into the root cause of the incident will commence upon full restoration of the grid.
