It further explained that Taoreed Lagbaja, who is reportedly on annual leave, was never appointed as an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

Additionally, it warned those advocating for a military takeover, stating that doing so would be illegal and considered treason. The explanation is contained in a statement released on Monday and signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, in response to the internet appearance of a viral video in which some irate people were seen demanding a military takeover. It further explained that Taoreed Lagbaja, who is reportedly on annual leave, was never appointed as an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

“To dispel rumours spread by some media outlets, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) would like to state that it has not declared the appointment of any senior officer as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). For the record, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) do not have any such positions. As part of his annual leave for 2024, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, is currently taking a well-earned break. The FGN’s Constitution outlines the duties that each Service Chief is responsible for carrying out, and the AFN is professionally managed. As is customary in the military, Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, is giving the COAS routine briefings.

“Those who are circulating false information are urged by DHQ to stop right away. The COAS is well and will soon return to his regular responsibilities after his leave is over.Furthermore, individuals who support a military takeover, as demonstrated in a widely shared video, ought to be informed that their actions constitute treason under the Constitution. The AFN is devoted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and is steadfastly committed to the advancement and preservation of our democracy. The military is still committed to fulfilling its legal obligations to uphold the integrity of the country. The President’s backing of the armed forces and the commitment of the AFN leadership are directly responsible for the relative peace that exists today.

In order to achieve this, the AFN and pertinent security agencies have been instructed to take the appropriate measures against any person or organisation pushing for changes to the nation’s constitution. Nigerians are appreciated by the CDS for their prayers and support. “Victory is guaranteed,” it said, advising media outlets to confirm information with the relevant authorities prior to disseminating false information to the public. It was only a few minutes ago that the COAS and CDS had spoken.
