The Police announced on Friday that three dismissed officers from the Kwara State Command, whose misconduct and corrupt actions led to the death of a student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, have been charged to court on two counts.

“They are facing charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide related to the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola and have been remanded in prison custody pending further court proceedings,” the statement from the Police said.

The dismissed officers, Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, were charged to court on October 16, 2024, by the Kwara State Police Command under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police.

The deceased, a 21-year-old National Diploma 2 student of Electrical/Electronics, was allegedly killed by police officers during a student protest over fuel price hikes in Ilorin.

The incident sparked widespread condemnation, prompting the transfer of the case to police headquarters in Abuja after IGP Kayode Egbetokun ordered a thorough investigation.

According to the Police, the investigation revealed that the officers were guilty of abandoning their duty post, engaging in corrupt practices, and exercising unlawful or unnecessary authority in connection with the incident.

Following the internal disciplinary trial, which found the three officers responsible for the student’s death, they were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective October 4, 2024.

In a statement, the Police emphasized, “This decisive action underscores IGP Egbetokun’s commitment to justice, professionalism, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force. Under his leadership, we are determined to ensure that officers maintain integrity, and any violations, particularly those resulting in loss of life, will be met with a strong response.”

The Police also expressed their “deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased,” adding, “We share in their grief and are committed to supporting them through this difficult time.”
