The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has achieved a commendable eighth position in the most recent ranking published by the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) on Thursday, August 29.

Rena Wakama’s team achieved a significant milestone by rising four positions in the rankings after their exceptional performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. They made history as the first African team, regardless of gender, to secure a top 10 ranking.

The African champions demonstrated exceptional performance at the Olympics, achieving remarkable triumphs over highly esteemed adversaries, namely Australia and Canada.

Nigeria entered the history books as the first African team to qualify for the quarter-final at the Olympics but later bowed out to eventual gold medalists United States of America.

The United States of America maintained its position at the pinnacle of the ranking, with Australia securing the second position. France, China, and Spain are among the top five countries in the ranking.

Mali, Senegal, Mozambique, and Cameroon are among the top five teams in Africa.
