Fake Nurse Docked By EFCC For Alleged ₦28.2 Million Fraud In Enugu

Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a fraudulent fertility nurse, has been charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) Enugu Zonal Directorate before Federal High Court Judge Mohammed Garba Umar in Independence Layout, Enugu State.

The defendant was charged with 45 counts, including fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and obtaining ₦28,278,600 through false pretences. Count 41 of the charge states: “That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, sometime in 2024 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, did obtain the total sum of One Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,600,000.00) only from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka, under the pretence of being a Medical Fertility Nurse (specially trained to assist women get pregnant with ease), which pretext you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence against Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and are punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

The charge’s count 24 states: “That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, sometime in 2024 in Enugu, with intent to defraud, did obtain the total sum of One Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N1,250,000.00) from one Amarachi Okpala under the pretence of being a Medical Fertility Nurse (specially trained to assist women get pregnant with ease), which pretext you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence against Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and are punished under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

After being read all of the counts, the defendant entered a not guilty plea. Blessing N. Obasi, the EFCC’s attorney, asked the court to set a trial date and remand the defendant to the Enugu State Correctional Facility in light of her pleas.

On the other hand, defence attorney G. C. Madubuegwu alerted the court to a motion on notice for bail that was filed on October 4, 2024.

“It is brought under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act’s Sections 162 and 165 (1),” he stated.He asked the court to grant the defendant liberal bail terms after filing the aforementioned application.Citing the defendant’s victims’ mental health, Obasi fiercely contested the bail application, arguing that the charge against the defendant was serious.

Following hearing arguments from both parties, Justice Umar postponed the case until November 12, 2024, in order to rule on the bail request.The Enugu State Correctional Facility was the next place the defendant was placed under remand. The criminal case against David Agwa began on August 28, 2024, when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, turned her over to the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate for investigation and potential prosecution after learning that the defendant had deceived unwary victims by posing as a medical fertility nurse.According to the EFCC, the defendant allegedly falsified the certificates of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in order to pass herself off as a Medical Fertility Nurse, who is specifically trained to help women become pregnant easily.Additionally, the defendant was accused of successfully defrauding more than forty-five innocent women who believed her false claims.
