The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the introduction of eight new programmes at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) as a strategic move to broaden its academic offerings and meet the growing demand for higher education among Nigeria’s teeming youths. The programs would officially begin in the 2024/2025 Academic Session, establishing FUNAAB as a university on par with its global peers.
The following programs have recently been approved: Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.LIS), B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Cyber Security, B.Sc. Information Systems, and B.Sc. Software Engineering. Other programs include B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology, B.Sc. Information Technology, and B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry.
Notably, six of the programmes fall under the broad discipline of Computer Science, necessitating the formation of three new Departments, each housing two programmes.
The expansion demonstrates FUNAAB’s commitment to advancing in-demand fields such as data science, cyber security, and software engineering, which are critical in today’s digital economy.
With this significant advancement, FUNAAB is well-positioned to provide its students with cutting-edge skills and knowledge, preparing them to contribute to the country’s technological and industrial growth.
Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, Vice-Chancellor, has expressed gratitude to Dr. Chris Miyaki, Ag. Executive Secretary of the NUC, for approving the start of the new programmes following the rigorous Resource Verification Exercise.
