Suspected cybercriminals have reportedly compromised the domain address of Nigeria’s GTBank, one of the country’s largest financial institutions. According to a source, the bank’s official website, gtbank.com, became inaccessible on Wednesday night. This disruption occurred just a day after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029.
No hacker group has yet claimed responsibility for the breach, which is believed to have begun on August 14. The attackers are suspected of creating an additional HTTP layer of the website, likely intending to steal customer data through phishing. A cybersecurity expert suggested that the bank’s login credentials might have been compromised, rather than the domain address being stolen for resale.
Many GTBank customers have taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration at being unable to access the website for transactions. In response, some GTBank representatives on X have asked customers to be patient and directed them to alternative channels for assistance.
GTBank serves millions of customers across Nigeria and other African countries, making this breach a significant concern for the bank and its clients.
