The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has reported that the Lagos Blue Line rail service has successfully transported two million passengers since its commencement of operations on September 4, 2023.
This milestone was disclosed by LAMATA’s Managing Director, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, in a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi, on Wednesday in Lagos.
The Blue Line, which is the first electrically powered rail system in West Africa, was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023. Following a series of test runs, it officially commenced passenger services later that year.
Akinajo highlighted the significant impact of the Blue Line on Lagos residents, connecting Marina to Mile 2 and offering a reliable and efficient transportation option. She noted that the service has maintained an excellent safety record and has been embraced by a diverse range of commuters, including professionals, entrepreneurs, students, and tourists, all contributing to the state’s economic growth.
In August 2024, LAMATA increased the daily frequency of trips on the Blue Line from 54 to 72, reducing travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from about 30 minutes to just 18 minutes. This improvement has drawn international attention and interest from potential investors in future rail infrastructure projects in Lagos.
Akinajo reaffirmed LAMATA’s dedication to expanding the rail network and enhancing the overall transportation experience in Lagos, expressing gratitude for the support of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, partners, and the people of Lagos.
