Super Eagles have made unbeaten start to AFCON qualifying campaign

Nigeria hosts Libya this evening in an attempt to build on their successful qualifying campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. After defeating Benin in September and drawing goallessly with Rwanda, the Super Eagles are currently leading Group D and are in a strong position to guarantee their spot in Morocco the following year.

Nigeria, led by Augustine Eguavoen, will be happy to shift their attention from their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign to AFCON affairs. Having lost their first four games, they are currently ranked fifth in that specific qualifying group and face a serious risk of missing out on another World Cup.

The Super Eagles, who have defeated Libya in their last four meetings and have not qualified for an AFCON since 2012, are clear favourites to win this afternoon.

Team News

Victor Osimhen will not be available for Nigeria during this international break.Due to a muscle ailment, the striker has not been able to play for Galatasaray since he left the game against Kasimpasa two weeks ago after scoring twice.

Osimhen’s replacement as the captain of Nigeria’s national team seems most likely to be Victor Boniface.
