Reports of the incident was confirmed by a counterinsurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, ZagaZola Makama, who provided details about the confrontation.
The Nigerian Army, acting on intelligence about a gathering of bandits at Bello Turji’s camp, dispatched a team led by a young officer to intervene. However, the operation faced setbacks when their vehicle got stuck in the marshy terrain, halting their progress.
Makama reported that the soldiers came under heavy fire from the bandits, resulting in a prolonged gunfight lasting several hours. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, hindered the arrival of air support, allowing the bandits to solidify their position.
Attempts to free the stuck vehicle using another Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle were unsuccessful, as it also became stuck in the mud. Despite the arrival of reinforcements, the situation escalated, forcing the soldiers to withdraw, leaving the vehicles behind. Fortunately, no casualties were reported among the troops.
Hours later, Turji and his group returned to the scene, celebrating their success by firing shots into the air and claiming victory in dislodging the soldiers and capturing their vehicles. The Nigerian Army has not yet confirmed the incident.
