The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School in Obada, Idi-Emi following the death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student at the school.This came after the teacher was arrested and suspended for allegedly being responsible for the student’s death as a result of corporal punishment on Friday of last week.

Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, the school’s principal, was previously questioned for allowing corporal punishment to be used on students in violation of state rules and regulations. She has also been suspended.On Tuesday, Mr. Lekan Adeniran, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, issued a statement to journalists.
The statement read in part, “The closure of the school was based on the directive of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who also directed that a panel be formed to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.””The governor has promised that those responsible for the outcome of the investigation will face the full wrath of the law”.Meanwhile, it was reported that representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology paid a visit to the late student’s family.
The purpose of the visit was to offer condolences to the family and express the Ministry’s sorrow for their loss, as well as to gather firsthand accounts of the incident for a thorough investigation.
The government’s delegation includes the Director, the Secondary and Higher Education Department in the Ministry, the Principals General, Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer, Imeko Afon, representatives of ANCOPPS, Ogun State President, Trade Union Congress and the Ogun State Chairman of ASSUS.The Principals General of Egba and Yewa Divisions, as well as the Director of Education, Secondary and Higher Education, who spoke during the visit, expressed their heartfelt condolences while also pledging the state government’s support to the family during this trying time.
The officials reassured the family that a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the facts of the incident and that accountability would be sought.They reiterated the government’s commitment to student safety, the creation of a more supportive school environment, and justice for the bereaved family following their son’s sudden death.
The DPO, Idi-Emi, assured the family that the ugly incident would be thoroughly investigated and justice served. He reassured them about their children’s safety at school.A condolence letter was delivered to the deceased family’s representative, along with a cash gift of N500,000.The family greeted the officials, expressing their grief and shock over their child’s sudden death.
