Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the traditional ruler of Oke Ila in Osun State, Nigeria, has stressed the importance of education in eradicating poverty. He urged governments at all levels to significantly increase their investment in education to ensure every child has access to quality learning.
Speaking at the 14th convocation lecture of Achievers University, Oba Abolarin, who is also an educationist, argued that poverty is a major barrier to education. He emphasized the need for inclusive and accessible education for all, especially vulnerable groups like children from low-income families, migrants, and those with disabilities.
Abolarin defined quality education as more than just attending school. It should be transformative, equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge to succeed in life. This requires a flexible, affordable, and inclusive learning environment that caters to everyone’s needs.
The monarch proposed several strategies for governments to improve access to quality education. These include:
* Increased resource allocation: Directing more resources towards underserved regions to bridge the educational gap.
* Focus on vulnerable populations: Providing targeted support services to help disadvantaged groups overcome barriers to education, such as child marriage in certain communities.
* Improved infrastructure and teacher quality: Investing in better facilities and well-trained teachers is crucial for a strong education system.
* Community engagement: Collaborating with local leaders and communities can help address cultural obstacles to education.
* Leveraging technology: Utilizing technology to provide remote learning opportunities in areas with limited access to schools.
By implementing these strategies, Oba Abolarin believes that Nigeria can move closer to achieving quality education for all, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction and a more prosperous society.
