The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for allegedly being involved in the sale of newborn twins.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on his X handle (@benHundeyin) on Friday, stating that the suspects were apprehended following a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
According to Hundeyin, patrol officers from the Ojodu Division arrested the women at Berger bus-stop, Lagos, while they were traveling from Abia State on September 9. The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, en route to deliver them to a nurse in Lagos, as arranged by the babies’ mother.
The suspects admitted to receiving ₦150,000 for transporting the babies, claiming the mother sold the babies because she could not care for them.
The case has been transferred to the Gender Unit, and the newborns are now in the care of a motherless babies’ home. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other individuals involved in the conspiracy, and the suspects have already been arraigned.
