The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Agency recently uncovered a major diversion scheme involving 16,600 bags of rice, worth over N1 billion, that were meant for federal government palliative distribution.
The rice, which carried the label “Not for Sale” and featured the image of President Bola Tinubu, was being repackaged in a warehouse in Nasarawa Local Government Area for illegal sale.
The facility was sealed on November 26, 2024, during an operation led by the agency’s Executive Chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado.
The warehouse was found to contain rice from 28 trucks that had been diverted and re-bagged into various brands for sale in local markets.
However, one individual was nabbed in connection with the operation, and investigations are underway to identify all those involved in the scam.
Rimin-Gado further emphasized that the diversion of such public property, especially amid current economic hardships, constitutes a clear form of corruption and will not be tolerated. He also confirmed that the operation was carried out under a court order, with further investigations to follow.
