At an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates Court in Ibadan on Thursday, Olayinka Akinware, 35, and Tunji Adesina, 29, were remanded for allegedly releasing four dogs to thwart police officers from arresting a suspect.
Magistrate M. Mudashiru, who did not take the suspects’ pleas due to jurisdictional reasons, ordered their detention at the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution. The case is set to be mentioned again on December 18, 2024.
Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Femi Oluwadare, informed the court that the suspects are charged with conspiracy and obstructing arrest. He detailed that on September 12, around 8:30 a.m., Akinware and Adesina attacked police officers—DSP Festus Fagbohun, ASP Ojo Tolulope, Insp Sariki Mohammed, and Cpl Tosin Olubode—with bamboo branches.
Oluwadare added that the suspects released their pitbull, rottweiler, and two Eskimo dogs in an effort to prevent the lawful arrest of Korede Adeoye at their residence located at No. 15, Oluwo Area, Ibadan.
The charges against them contravene Sections 332 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000, with Section 332 carrying a possible life imprisonment sentence if the suspects are found guilty.
