The Ondo State Local Government Election 2025 concluded on January 18th, with citizens across 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) exercising their civic duties. Provisional results from 16 LGAs confirm the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the dominant party, securing all councillorship seats.

Election Highlights 

  • APC Dominance: The ruling party won decisively in 16 LGAs, including Akure South and Akure North.
  • Pending Results: Results from Ondo West LGA are delayed, while Owo LGA results are expected by 7 PM today.
  • NNPP Logo Controversy: Elections in one LGA were canceled after ballot papers featured the outdated logo of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

PDP Withdraws Over ODIEC Concerns

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew 48 hours before the Ondo State Local Government Election 2025, citing a lack of confidence in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC). PDP’s Media Director, Mr. Leye Igbagbo, stated, “We cannot trust ODIEC to ensure fairness.”

Thirteen parties registered, though only 12 contested:

Niger State Tanker Explosion: Federal Government Condoles Victims

In unrelated news, the Federal Government expressed condolences to Niger State residents following a fatal tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Gurara LGA. Prof. Nantewe Yilwatda, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, lamented the recurring incidents: “These explosions cause irreversible loss of lives and property.”
