Yoruba Nation Activist Passes Away in Custody Amid Treason Trial in Ibadan

It was revealed during a court hearing on Wednesday that Adejumo Lateef, one of the Yoruba Nation agitators, had died while under the care of the Nigeria Correctional Services.

Among the 27 defendants, Lateef was the 18th one charged with treason, conspiracy, and illegal firearm possession in relation to the April 2024 invasion of the Oyo State government Secretariat, which was an attempt to establish the Yoruba Nation (Oodua Republic).

Adeyemo Peter, Adeyemo Joseph, Amos Oluwaseyi Ogundeji, Ayanwale Rofiat, Olalere Mathew, and Ismaila Malomo Peter are among the defendants (1–27) on trial.

The others are Ayanwale Saburi, Adeola Elegbede, Ademola Adeniyi, Ogundeji Alabi, Ojo Olufemi, Ajani Ezekiel, Adejumo Lateef, Ayoola David, Murittala Abefe, Ismaila Adepoju, and Fatunmbi Wasiu.

Adesokan Hameed, Abiona Esther, Omoyajowo Funsho, Tola Olufemi, Oritola Alabi, Kayode Fakeye, and Taiwo Titilayo are also on the list.

Five counts of conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful assembly, treasonable felony, and treason were brought against the suspects at their arraignment.

Justice K. B. Olawoyin is presiding over the case at the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.

Judge Olawoyin’s decision postponed the case’s arraignment and hearing until November 6, 8, and 13.
